Description
Standing Stones at Callanish, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides
Taken during a fantastic road-trip in May 2016, this spot was certainly one of the highlights! The story of the stones at Callanish (Calanais, in the local Gaelic language) starts some 5000 years ago, with further stone circles scattering the surrounding windswept landscape of the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. The main site at Callanish consists of an inner circle of stones up to 4m high, overlaid with a cruciform pattern of smaller stones, 4 of which are shown in this photo.
